Now, with a little time and patience you can find the internet littered with grimoires which would be nearly impossible to own, or just read otherwise. Most new books of magic, whether it be high magic, lesser magic, black, white, or any color of the spectrum will usually refer to or include tid bits of older manuscripts or grimoires. So, basically there are a few books out there which are the building blocks of today’s magic. Looking through you’ll see a lot of things, but also a lot of the same things. Just think of magic like music. Every note has been played, it is up to the transition and the combination to be unique.

From The Keys of Solomon to The Magic of Abramelin the Mage, the bulk of these books have much information, but the problem is usually for someone of the LHP. These rituals are built upon Jewish mysticism and Qabalah to an extent. It would help if you knew the mechanics of these systems but it isn’t necessary. Qabalah is simpler than it seems and had roots back to many cultures. Also, a LHP doesn’t have to just do Qlippoth, because Death is Dark and Life is RHP. If they would actually study it, it’s fairly neutral, like all magic is.

When reading these older grimoires often there will be chapters for invocation of angels, the gifts for them, and later chapters of how you can have them protect you from whatever pagan based Demons you intent to bind, enslave, or call for your use. With the exception of Abramelin the Mage, every grimoire will tell you there are proper courtesy, and tact for the calling of these Demons. That if they obey without fault do not attempt to attack them, and if you have to do things to force them to come, apologize when they do. I think this is funny, “I force you to come here this instant!” “Oh… um sorry about that, please don’t squish me!” What is more funny is that the psychological damage results in people afraid of Demons and the LHP. I guess when you play with fire, you get your balls burnt off.

In the way of language, in the grimoire of Abramelin the Mage, it states that one shouldn’t perform any magic in a language outside of one’s mother tongue. This even S.L. Mathers points out to have digression against. But, this grimoire was made for Abraham’s son to teach him the way of magic and it is a rule geared to the novice, the initiate, and it is a good rule for those young in the ways. Working with magic within your own tongue allows creativity, allows you to know each and every word said and speak them with true compassion! A ritual will hardly work if you are muttering and mumbling words you can’t even pronounce. I mean think! Also, don’t use big words like you are trying to impress the Demon. Just because you can pronounce a six syllable word doesn’t mean it will be any more successful.

I recommend taking every ritual you see, totally stripping it down, take out whatever names you see, translate the language to English or your native language, even add things so it feel better to you. Cherry pick at lease for this time in your occult life. Believe me every religion which exists now is the result of cherry picking. It’s because it works! Yes, I am saying if a prayer to Jehova sounds really good, change some names and use it. People really think Demons will attack you over petty things like that.

But what of those people and the lines which say NEVER ALTER THIS TEXT and people who say if you change one word of a ritual the Gods will smote you?

I say fuck them, fuck tradition, and fuck any warning you see in a book! Do not be swayed by words of warning! Touch the stove to see if it’s hot! At this point tradition has no grounds to tell you what to do, it doesn’t know you, it doesn’t know how well you work with a Demon. I am not saying you have to destroy every single ritual for something to work, but I am saying the Demons will not attack you for these things, nor will angels, gods…  or any damn imaginary beings. That’s right I am talking to you Mr. Flying Purple People Eater!

Since we have went over breaking down years of oppression and all that, lets get down to the meat of this operation. I am going to write the bones of a ceremonial ritual down. It will be just a simple outline to show how one can make a ritual from nothing. You can also alter existing rituals by just following these guidelines and remember. It is all dependant on you. If it doesn’t feel right, get rid of it. This isn’t a be all and end all, it is just a possible way.

Banishing

A simple act which helps you concentrate. I never really imagine I am banishing anything outside myself, more so to clear my mind. I simply turn to each direction and imagine a light far off in the aether which dispels the fog of my mind.

Incense

Not necessary, but helps me get into the mindset, and when the appropriate incense is lit, helps the invocation.

Candles

Not necessary, but along with saying the opening helps me balance out my energy and makes a corporeal representation of Demons.

Ritual opening

I use a standard Demonolatry Invocation opening, calling to Flereous, Lucifer, Belial and Leviathan or Fire, Air, Earth Water, in their appropriate direction. This isn’t necessary, but it assists in balancing energies during the ritual.

Invoking the Demon

This is asking the Demon you are working with to assist you in what ever way you need. It could be something from a simple “I invoke you (name)” to an elaborate ceremony  which prayers, drinking from a blessed chalice, giving gifts, bloodletting… but the main point is for the calling of the Demon.

Prayer

Now, these are different from the above if it is an elaborate ritual. These are more so prayers for the goal you want, and thanking the Demons for their time. This can also be towards the end, but I prefer it here.

Gifts

I would say not necessary but I’d feel like an ass. The gift is just a thanksgiving to the Demons. It can be during really any time of the ritual, there can by multiple gift giving’s as well. I would say burning the sigil would be a gift if you believe that the energy raises like a phoenix. If this isn’t your personal belief and think it is more torture, well don’t do that.

Meditation

This is not necessary, but recommended. It is the point in the ritual you explore the energy, the changes, and perhaps when you will receive a communication. It can last just a few minutes or for however long you want.

Ritual closing

This is just basically a thanks and a license to depart. It’s simple enough but I have forgotten it a few times caught up with things which happened during the ritual. Also, you can leave a ritual open if you intend to do dreamwork.

Then you clean up, snuff the candles of their flame, unless your goal is to burn them all the way. Wipe away the ashes of the incense, or collect them for a future use, empty a burning bowl in which ever way works.

It really is that simple. I’d say work with any Demons regardless what someone told you. Try to work with other Deities too.

The main thing here is to not be afraid. There are people who have done this many times before, you are a long way from being the first. Do what feels right, and be ready for a different experience then Joe, Mike or Melissa had. It’s all relative to the occultist.

(The Magic Circle of Solomon and the Triangle of Art)

Preface

Before I go into these spirits, Demons, Gods, Djinns, I’d like to talk briefly of them in general. I believe a spirit to be any mass of energy which goes through a pattern which does not follow the currant of said energy. A spirit is that which is embedded thoughts and emotions; or programmed to do a particular act, out of need, out of necessity, out of greed perhaps. This definition is so broad to purposely include every God, Demon, Angel, ghost, elemental, and thoughtform conceivable. They can be of a planet, can be of a star, can be of the aethyr, can simply be for no reason. These beings can be kind, altruistic, neutral and not caring, or malicious, they can be called to when in trouble, or called forth by a practitioner when needed. They are not evil, or good, as such concepts are ours alone, they simply are, and simply exist. They are not human, though some can be from the myths of one extraordinary man.

As beings outside of ourselves we can only use conjecture to assume what they are, and if at all they are sentient. Most Ceremonial right hand path occultists believe these spirits to either be more-so deserving of being called on demand, for punishment, or believe them to be magickal tools, without a mind. You wouldn’t pray and offer up sacrifices to a tool. So what if a spirit named AHM-REM existed and the mage who first wrote of this spirit died centuries ago? What if the mage who first worked with this specifically named spirit AHM-REM actually created the spirit? What if this spirit’s name was just an anagram of “HAMMER?” What if it was simply a tool? I don’t doubt people would still debate over how to invoke or evoke or summon the spirit AHM-REM, or have changed his name through translations so it appears nothing like the original. So, that brings up a conjecture of what these spirits are.

We cannot truly know what these spirits are until we work with them, this is my firm belief. I believe the mind processes energy in different ways, and by working with them in a constant way, you’ll help yourself to be able to sense them more often and stronger. You need to work with them to basically exercise and focus in on what they are, what they seem to be, and how they effect you.

As for what The Lesser Keys of Solomon truly are, I will give my definition of a Grimoire as I see it fit. The best definition for what a grimoire is, was given by J.C. Lisiewski in his book “Ceremonial Magic & The Power of Evocation” in which he talks about the general evolution from the Graeco-Egyptian Papyri and branching out through the egos into New Age and Chaos Magick. It is bias in the way the author is a traditional Ceremonialist, but they do not hinder the facts. He wrote that a grimoire is, primarily, a book which is a system of magic. I agree to this. The actual word grimoire comes from the old French word “grammaire,” which comes from the root of a Greek word meaning, “to relate to letters,” that word is “grammatikos.” Over time, the word lost meaning to simply a label of any book which consisted of being a system of language, to which the word, “grammar” was defined.

Most grimoires are the bastard lovechild of Graeco-Egyptian magical papyri, Egyptian ideology, or native religion, which were confiscated by the oppressive Catholic Church, and later, with heavy influence, books of the same nature were leaked out by scholarly Deacons, Abbots and Bishops; and to the opposite side of the spectrum with the leaking of Qabalistic secrets once only known to the first born male of every Jewish child along with certain Temple libraries known to be filled with ancient texts. These two radically different types of magick came together to create much of the Ceremonial texts we now know today. The primary Pagan roots can be traced back with little effort, though, each author of each book has more or less been lost to the sands of time. This is not to say that all Catholic, Hebrew, Pagan or otherwise texts are the same, or not original, it simply is a timeline of the evolution of magic as we now know it.

Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis

Of the five parts of the Lesser Keys of Solomon, I only know three extensively. These are the Ars Goetia, Ars Theurgia Goetia, and Ars Notoria. Of the three, I have only worked extensively within the Goetia, while I’ve only studied the Theurgia Goetia and Notoria. I have still read all five along with the other books of Solomonic Magic. Of the workings I have done, I have come to the conclusion that the spirits of the Goetia are definitely real, and can effect the world around me. I have also come to the conclusion, that planetary hours, are indeed, important for workings. Even simple prayers can be strengthened by knowing the correct hours of which to pray. I’ve felt the effects of the Goetia spirits from the simplest emotion to seeing a sight my eyes cannot focus to behold, I’ve had dreams ranging from the extraordinary to the prophetic, I’ve seen my life change before my eyes in the shortest time of my life… and I enjoyed all of it.

According to it’s history, it is to be believed that King Solomon, the wise man, the third King of Israel, who was downfallen by the favor of God by the blasphemous sin of idolatry (as he built temples for his wives and their Pagan religions), had scribed this tome. He was to have summoned countless Demons by the aid of Angels, but mostly to a ring what was given to him by the Archangel Michael, to construct his Palace and as he called each one forth from the Infernal Abyss, each spoke their name, and told him what was their specialty and ability. To these, though, he ignored, and simply told them to build for him a palace of unimaginable size. This is the bulk of the Gnostic text “The Testament of Solomon.” That which is the pseudepigraphical text has King Solomon tricking Beelzebul by causing a lesser Demon Ornias to bring a ring, given to Solomon by Michael, to the Prince of Demons. At Beelzebul’s touch, it causes him to be under the control of King Solomon along with all of his subordinates. After this, it goes into a stint of King Solomon calling Demons and having them do mundane tasks as opposed to what they say they have dominion or knowledge of. These Demons often are one in the same of Pagan Gods, including a being which is described as Medusa, Kronos, and many others which are often obvious. When this text was translated into English in October of 1898, it gave the estimated date of it’s creation, which is between the first and fifth century C.E. at most, well after the King’s death, by hundreds to  one-thousand years.

{From this point, we can assess that it was commonplace to call one nation’s Gods as Demons, and we can say that this book was not written by Solomon. The actual manuscript (theretofore referred as MS) of the “Lemegeton” only dates back to as early as the 17th century, with books of similar spirits dating back farther to an earlier time}

The spirits of Ars Theurgia Goetia and Ars Paulina can be dated to the publications of Abbot Johannes Trithemius (1462-1516) and his work Steganographia, written in the year c.1499. It wasn’t until 1606 that the decryption key would be published along with the text which made the first two parts readable. His ability to cypher was famous. As he was an abbot, he had access to many texts which were kept away from the eyes of the common man. What makes him interesting though, is he had many pupils in his time, and the one of most notoriety was Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa (1486-1535) he was only a pupil for a short time. Agrippa, one of the most influential occultists, wrote tomes only discovered much later from a plagiarist’s pen of Francis Barrett. Of his texts, his teacher Trithemius often told him to hide his work and not make it public for fear of backlash of the times. Of Agrippa’s students, there was a man named Johann Weyer (1515-1588). Weyer/Weir worked as a doctor, as an advocate against the witch hunt (calling many of the witches simply people of mental ill) and was the author of Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, “The False Kingdom of the Demons” (or The False Monarchy of the Inferior Divinity). It is rumored that the usage of the words, spirit, exorcist, “false kingdom,” and Cartagra was to both poke at the times and to keep himself alive after publication and to not be hunted down.

As you can plainly see the pattern of the passing of material from master to student, it seems the usage and familiarity of the Goetia spirits vastly predates “The Lesser Keys of Solomon.” The Pseudomonarchia Daemonum names sixty-nine spirits, of which they are all the spirits of the Goetia spirits, except for the alteration of spirits;  (3) Vassago [Prince] replaces Pruflas [Prince & Duke], (70) Seere is added [Prince], (71) Dantalion is added [Duke], and (72) Andramalius is added [Earl].

Being as the Lemegeton was anonymously published, but in the same style and wording as Weyer would have written, it is not far-fetched to connect that a follower of him had written the text. MS exist which place this within the range of the 17th century, and show these books are more-so an accumulation of occult, ceremonial, and spirit evocation knowledge into the form of one tome. It’s not hard to believe “The Lesser Keys of Solomon” are the amalgamations of Trithemius, Agrippa and Weyer’s works. Ars Goetia is the near carbon copy of Pseudomonarchia Daemonum with regards to the spirit catalogue, but within the Ars Goetia is a primary system of magic, which is not uncommon from Agrippa’s drawings, including a nine foot magical circle. Ars Theurgia Goetia is known to have many of the same spirits as Trithemius’s Steganographia. Ars Paulina is filled with Agrippa’s known work, mostly the hours and times of the day and Angelic sigils. Ars Almadel contains in it how to make a tablet for the dispersing of incense smoke and holding of candles along with the names of Angels and God, it seems simple to create but I’ve yet to see it in an older text. Ars Notoria or Ars Nova is a set of prayers and invocations to Angels and God which also corresponds to signs of the Moon and hours of the day. Sloane MS 3825 and 2731 do not include the last book, nor do any authentic MS it seems, but I could be wrong.

The Lesser Keys of Solomon have Catholic and Jewish Qabalistic correspondence, Names of God and an overall bend with the evocation of spirits. Many are a time in which you can find the Catholic Holy Trinity, as well as many Angels of which some are labeled as “fallen” by the Vatican within the MS. They also use metals aligned to the planets as it’s known in Qabalah, as well as the hours of the days. These could be loosely linked or based in the Pagan religion magics as well.

Ars Goetia

The most known book of the Lesser Keys of Solomon. This book focuses on the system of magic to evoke the seventy-two spirits which were said to have been sealed within a bronze vessel by King Solomon; the spirits being forced to obey him and any which bares his pentacle. It includes elaborate rituals, nine-foot circles, swords stained with the blood of a black hen. I’ve found that a good deal of the spirits to stem from older gods. Some of these are obvious like Bael to Baal, or Astaroth to Ishtar, as some of these are radically different like Bifrons to the Roman God Janus. With the Goetia spirits I have worked with, I firmly believe that they are all of the Earth. That while each noble rank of Hell is of a planetary focus, that they, the spirits, rather exist within the light which shines on the planet. They are the aspects as we know them on our Terra. That, as the Moon is full, or waxing, or waning, and the oceans react, and the people react, so too do the spirits of the Marquises react as they are under Luna. I encountered this when working with the President, Buer, while I knew not that Mercury was in retrograde. It caused a deep depression and emotional turmoil for the brief five days I worked with him and cleared up the minute I began my astrological degree of Vassago, a Prince, being of Jupiter. The project I am currently performing has taught me many things, and I am glad I prolonged this paper to partake in the workings of each Goetia Spirit. I’ve found that the Goetia spirits have acted quite interesting from the view point of the practitioner, rather than the view point of the theorist. Of the spirits listed and their odd imagery each one is described with, I’ve only encountered a scant few which resemble these outlandish beings. One being Sitri, which I had a strong connection to felines, and there second being Seere, a very beautiful man on the cusp of sexual duality. For some like Haagenti, I saw as a withered old man, appearing beaten and broken, but a mind never the sharper with a flaming glint within his eyes with his trickster smile showing his crooked teeth. I saw Sabnock as a gargoyle-like man, face of a bat, with the cheek bones and skull cap of a man or primate, wrapped within his wings, standing tall behind a wintry dead garden.

The Goetia outlines procedures for the evocation and control for these spirits using the names of God and threats, and while not being as callous as the instructions found within “The Sacred Magic of Abramelin,” it still is malicious with the burning of sigils and the burning of a box filled with sulfur if-in they refuse to come. But, comparing grimoires is a tedious thing, Abramelin is mostly about the casting out of Demons from the flesh to make oneself pure, as the Goetia focuses on what can the being do for your own good. It contests that a triangle is needed for the holding place for the spirit until the ritual is complete, and most have come to the consensus that the Black Mirror is the best tool to place within the triangle as it seems the best gateway tool the occultist has in his disposal as well as being able to use from some distance as opposed to a crystal ball. The Ars Goetia also goes over an elaborate nine foot circle to protect the mage from the spirit while being surrounded by names of God. It seems rather ironic that a group who’s motto is often “…harm none…” attacks these beings and demands them to give knowledge or favors. The nine foot circle was also in Agrippa’s works along with in “The Magus” the plagiarized tome by Francis Barrett.

For the left hand path student, the Goetia seems to them their first step into evocation and invocation. Some members of the LHP community believe the Goetia to be like magical batteries, simply currants of energy, and use sigils to bind that near-if-not endless flow to their tools, magicians like Michael Ford. Others find the Goetia spirits as nobel or vicious  Demons which they can work with like a fellow scholar, worship like a god, or try to merge with to become one with them. They can also look to them as a counterpart, a teacher, a Patron, a Lord, a General… ect. I would recommend working with these beings when you feel ready, and to see if they feel like true sentient beings before believing one or the other. The first step should be the step of self-discovery and the step of self-development, and while grimoires seem a perfect tool for this, they were not written for you, nor do they know who you are or how you work with spirits.

Aliester Crowley famously wrote, “The spirits of the Goetia are portions of the human brain” he was flawed in writing that! Israel Regardie often brought up this point. Crowley knew little about the brain, and was terrified of hypnosis. He knew little of psychology as well, and was not versed in the way of Jung as we now know him. S. Jason Black in the introduction to Joseph C. Lisiewski’s book “Ceremonial Magic & The Power of Evocation” says this within the evidence that Aleister Crowley had no idea what he was saying when he typed that introduction to the 1904 edition to the Goetia. He had never written anything about the brain, parts of the mind or it’s process before and to simply bring up a point like that seems was the spark of his own ego wishing to seem revolutionary.

Now, I believe the brain processes sensory information among other things. Just like how the eyes catch the vibrations of electromagnetism in the correct waves and see the world as we do, I believe things of the paranormal level resonate to a similar frequency, but the eyes are only among the many senses which can or will detect it. Any psychic can tell you of feeling an energy, teaching, tasting, smelling, seeing the past, or the future. Of those who are true, their senses are stronger than those who come in and ask questions. Now, these will always be different for different people. I can see aura, but I see it in a world all together different from the world of sight. It’s spontaneous, but the colors come as memories, like seeing green, white and red will remind me of my first slice of watermelons and the entire history of that moment within a few seconds. It’s an ability I love to have, but it gets annoying when people ask me so often what aura they have as I cannot tell them off the top of my head, I have to relive my life for that second and sometimes it isn’t pleasant. Just so too, the Goetia Spirits come to me in ways others often have never heard of, visions of beings which shouldn’t exist and dare I say “non-euclidean angles”  but sometimes they are exactly the same or partially to how they are described in the texts. As I’ve described Seere (a transgender-like sexual duality person of exquisite beauty and soft voice) or Bifrons (A two faced man with his body being the bulk of a black rainbow cloud), I’ve had people pull me aside and looking oddly, they tell me they’ve had the same experience. I believe that the occult cannot be text book, because everyone has their own strength, their own weakness, and the journey of magick is a journey of self-discovery, awakening, and acceptance of yourself.

Of the most known copy of the Goetia, the 1904 edition compiled by Aliester Crowley and Samuel Liddell Mathers is not a faithful edition to the manuscript. A truer to the original can be found at the bottom of this paper. It has simpler sigils not bound by circles, and excluded parts which Aliester Crowley added. It’s only slight differences in sigils, but the rituals are much different, as the 1904 version included Enochian as one of the evocation techniques.

As the Goetia became more mainstream through translations and the infamy of Crowley, so too did it become easier to obtain. Soon groups and occultists made the text work into their systems and The Book of the Black Serpent was one of these hybrids. The Book of the Black Serpent has dates which correspond to astrological degrees and encompass 49 Goetia spirits of the 72. It includes spirits which are not included by the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum. The book goes into Qlippoth Goetic Evocation with depth for such a topic. It was originally found within the books entitled “Goetia Evocation” and “The Sorcerer and the Apprentice.” The astrological dates for the spirits are;

Other Goetia books give other astrological degrees along with tarot cards which align to the spirit like “Aleister Crowley’s Illustrated Goetia” These have vivid drawings of the Goetia spirits and the entire book is well compiled from the occultists Lon Milo DuQuette, Christopher S. Hyatt, Ph.D, and the wonderful artwork done by David P. Wilson. For any budding occultists out there, I recommend getting to know DuQuette and Hyatt’s works as they are great for beginners, easy to follow, simple, yet very informative. I remind the reader, these correspondence are not perfect, as the occult practice can never be textbook. They are based off of Aliester Crowley’s “777,” a wondrous book of correspondences. As these elements, times, and cards correspond to each spirit, it’s easy to forget that these are not in cement, so do not take any of these on faith alone and always test everything you see. I also added in the Goetic sigils and definitions as per Mathers’ revision.

Note: I didn’t add the associated colors because they are not part of traditional magic, being only elements of New Age based on psychological factors. Many consider this aspect when copy-pasting from a badly documented website. Golden Dawn used colors which were not traditional in any sense.

Note 2: For more correspondences, consult The Complete Magician’s Tables by Stephen Skinner, PhD, the 5th Expanded Edition from May 2015 which has 64 pages more than the 1st edition and it is almost five times larger and more wide raging then Crowley’s Liber 777.

He is under the Power of the East, and cometh up in the form of an old fair Man, riding upon a Crocodile [very mitely], carrying a Goshawk upon his fist, and yet mild in appearance. He maketh them to run that stand still, and bringeth back runaways. He teaches all Languages or Tongues presently. He responds generously to your requests. Under him are twenty-six legions, partly of the order of Thrones, and partly of the order of Angels.

There are also mentioned five other spirits in the Goetia which are not explained all that much. These are Amaymon, Gaap, Ziminiar, Corson and Lucifer. Amaymon, Gaap, Ziminiar and Corson are rabbinical but those names are malleable and change through MS. Those are simply the spirits which rule the elemental directions. Amaymon is to Air, Gaap is to Fire, Ziminiar is to Water and Corson is to Earth. It seems Lucifer is only mentioned in passing as a few spirits being very obedient onto him. These spirits are sometimes changed to the Kings of the Goetia or the highest Demons of the Abramelin demonology.

“Though my add here is not that important, I though I should explain why I chose to put the information from Goetic Demonolatry by Ellen Purswell. At the beginning of the book she talks about her decision to work with the Goetic hierarchy. The demonolater’s choice of working with a hierarchy is very important as it somehow connects to his persona in ritual practice. I for one, haven’t yet worked with the Goetia hierarchy because it just doesn’t suit my personality and needs. The only Goetic demon I’ve worked with was Asmoday that I have found very different from the other demons in the hierarchy I am working with, that is Dukante.

It is well known however, that most demonolaters choose the goetic hierarchy instead of others and have patrons from the goetic hierarchy. Some choose Goetia because it is more complex and complete (The Goetic demons can be divided by month, night and day, tarot card representations, and zodiac decans as 72 divides by 12 easily with 6. Elementally, there are 18 demons in each element) others choose it because it’s older. In that situation I must point out that Demons are all old. If Dukante is recent that doesn’t mean the demons in it are young or new. They may be of the same if not older age from those of the Goetia or other hierarchies. Thus, age is not a factor one should rely on. S.Connolly, the author of the Complete Book Of Demonolatry declared that she chose the Dukante hierarchy because it was put together by a Demonolater, unlike the Goetia which was created by a Judeo-Christian person. Her belief is that a Christian would not get a correct hierarchy from a Demon.

I also believe that a demonolater or Satanist couldn’t use the Demons from the Goetia in worship and equate them to Satanism, as many of the goetic spirits are still devoted to God and some wish to return to Heaven. Also, many Satanists are against the procedures of the Goetia, which are very strict. It is like a driver who doesn’t believe in roads. They also believe the protective circle is useless and even insulting to the demons, which is similar as a deep sea diver who doesn’t believe in oxigen tubes. Also, many Satanists do not recognize the authority of God over the demons as in the judeo-christian tradition, yet they use the demons from a judeo-christian tradition. It is like reading “A Moveable Feast” yet denying the existence of Ernest Hemingway.

Ellen says in her book that the reason she chose the Goetic hierarchy is simply out of comfort. There are different things within Goetic Demonolatry, including the swap of the earth and water elemental directions (earth becomes west and water north). There are also common demons whose elemental properties change across the hierarchies. For example, Belial is earth in the Dukante hierarchy, but becomes fire in the Goetic hierarchy. If you’ve worked with Belial as earth and it did not feel right, you might work with Belial as fire and feel immediately comfortable.

To some point, I must agree that Goetia is the real deal if one wishes to become more learned in the ceremonial magick systems. You simply cannot use a hierarchy that is incomplete or has uncertain correspondences. But if you’re a skeptic as I am, you cannot trust anything you read in books. So you need to make all this work by yourself, be creative and patient.

However, for a person of the Left-Hand Path, there are ways and parts that could come of help, thus I decided to include Purswell’s information as well as make a recommendation of S. Connolly’s Daemonolatry Goetia, which is “a step-by-step guide to Goetia from a Daemonolatry perspective”

Ars Theurgia Goetia

The Ars Theurgia is a hard book to come across outside of the internet world. There are over five hundred sigils for different spirits within that book, most subordinate spirits to the 31 aerial spirits which roughly follow the same planetary ruling as the Goetia ranks. While each one of these, even some being nameless having sigils, some having more than one, they are given no information other than being subordinate, or ruling over day or night. Within the book, they are often said to be either to have patience or be rather unruly, ruling a particular element, and to have odd natures being either good or evil. These seem to come from the Steganographia, but if they are from Old Gods, I know not. A link is below.

As it’s own author calls these spirits Aerial seems to consist to my theory that the spirits of the Goetia are of the planet. By aerial, I am unsure if they simply mean off the ground or, to follow the then believed theory how space is filled with aethyr. By that, these can easily mean Celestial spirits, as opposed to the Terrestrial.

Ars Paulina

The Ars Paulina is the third book of The Lesser Keys of Solomon and it seems to be much of Agrippa’s work within the workings of the Lesser Keys along with spirits from the Steganographia. It focuses on Angels, and their subordinates, on how to ask for their assistance, the proper days, hours, within the degrees of the celestial bodies, and their sigils.

Ars Almadel

The Ars Almadel is the fourth book of The Lesser Keys of Solomon. It instructed how to create the Almadel. The creation almadel intrigues me, to make a wax tablet which incense smoke rises from, and which comfortably holds candles. for the ritual. Able to etch named into it, able to make a new one as needed. It holds four candles, and the book is kind of an arts and crafts take on it telling the practitioner what they need for it’s creation. It also goes into detail about the angels needed to be invoked, what to ask for, how to bless it, what to carve into the Almadel’s face, and a brief overview of dates and astrological times for the best invocations.

Ars Notoria

This last book is most like “The Sacred Magic of Abramelin” as it deals with receiving an angel’s visage and words, which can be linked to the Holy Guardian Angel. It also is mostly about direct communication, and prayers. These can be used to try to communicate with spirits you have a strong affinity for, or wish to as well. The watching of hours and the translation of prayers into other languages also worked well for myself. It, however, is absent from most MS and is a stand-alone book added only during the late 17th century.

People are only animals, its one of the base rules of Satanism, or any LHP religion. As such a beast, we hunger for many passions. Those pleasures have been demonized by the RHP, but we do not follow a church or its doctrines. Before Judaism and religions of repression, sex was a common part of life and even religion. The gods of the Greek were bisexual, and had male and female lovers, they even had temples of sex. Orgy just meant secret meeting usually to Dionysus, the god of wine, so its ironic that a lesser intention of the word is the taboo we now associate with it. Those who have a relationship with someone else who also believes the same thing are lucky.

A Satanist’s life should first and foremost be dedicated to Satan and his demons. So there, they have a person that they can be closer with than a Satanist without such a partner, perform various rituals, partake in sex magic, and be the others support when times of doubt may come. The passion of mankind leads some occultists to believe in the possibility of sex with demons. While a relationship with a demon is something a LHP believer strives for, sex with astral beings just seems like a flight of fancy for the deluded. An orgasm can be triggered without genital stimulation, and the brain is the most used organ in sex. People can believe what they want, but it doesn’t make it true.

For just about everyone, sex is a very pleasurable and a natural drive you shouldn’t try to hide no matter what your preference. You should not fear being yourself and wanting what attracts you. Straight, gay, bisexual or asexual, I have not seen one Satanic group turn someone away from being any of these. In fact, I know of a group for gay Satanists called Cult of the Ram.

How and why is it normal to be LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual)? Because that’s how nature is, diversified. As there are many races there are also many types of sexuality.

It isn’t a genetic disease of a psychological disorder as many believe. That was established since 1973 when the American Psychiatric Association removed their classification of homosexuality as mental disorder. Same was stated in 1975 by the American Psychological Association, and in 1990 the World Health Organization accepted this as well, when it declared that it is not a disease nor a mental disorder and does not need treatment. That, of course, was established after lots of research in psychiatry, psychology, etc. If we are to look at nature, or google, we find a plentitude of homosexual animals. And we’re talking about over 1000 species of animals!

I myself (Xophier) am asexual but am attracted to romance, and at this time the romance was in the form of someone of the same-sex. I feel strongly for him, an atheist who I will not push into my beliefs, but I hold Satan higher and he understands this. I (F.v.F.) am bisexual, and have been in many gay relationships, as I can find beauty in both sexes, as I can find beauty in both the night and the day, the storm and the sunny days. There’s beauty that some people can see, and others don’t. It is of personal preference and desire, and if a homosexual tells you that ass is better than pussy that is not something universally true, what it’s good for him might not be for you and vice-versa.

With LHP religions the topic of discussion sometimes comes up as, if its legal… should we partake? Should we advocate everything legal, even if it is not moral? Well we have no books to base our morals and as Aleister Crowley wrote in The Book of Law  “Do what thou wilt Shall Be the Whole of the Law” and “…there is no Law beyond Do what thou wilt…” This Law is not based in legality but rather the oldest form of the word law and the sense of it. What it means for me is that whatever works for us is our law, whatever we feel remorseful and feel is immoral is our Law. That is how I answer those questions for everyone is different and they should not conform onto others ideals of perfection and/or debauchery <root word is Bacchus otherwise known in Greek as Dionysus>.

Getting back to the Greek, I pick back up on the modern interpretation of “Orgy.” Having multiple sexual partners is up to the people involved. Although people believe in “mob mentality” in these situations I assume Satanists can think for themselves and not conform, as by nature we are not conformists. Some Covens have orgies, some do not. A Black Mass involves certain sexual situations by two or more people, does that make it an orgy? In the most original term I would say every rite conducted by people RHP or LHP is an orgy.

Sex is as powerful as its suppression. It holds the foundation of life and ecstasy. Withholding this power within deep meditation can bring one close to a highest plane of thinking, commonly called Gnosis. While, using it within a ritual can give the demon or Satan a gift that is far from anything else, energy wise. Sex in magick has also had its own movements before time. Kama Sutra is the best guide for the history of this subject as it is religious ritualized sex. Every position is liken to a prayer. Building the energy of two <or one> having sex up until the time of climax then focusing that energy, that lust, that love, the shear boundless amounts of emotions towards you intended goal can give important results.

Within one’s life you are told many things, but the whole path of the Satanist is to ignore these age old fears and morals. People are people, human beings are a people of pleasure and they seek this wherever they can. Sexuality is something that person must accept. For “Do as thou wilt Shall Be the Whole of the Law – Love is the Law – Love under Will.” Life is life, be who you are and enjoy what life has to offer.

The word sigil comes from the Latin word which means mark, or sign. It’s definition was synonymous with the word seal. A sigil is a sign which stands for something, anything from glyphs to star signs. Sigils have many definitions and each works differently with different people. There are various types of sigils as well. Everything from one made aeons ago to ones made from alphabetical letters, from supposedly drawn by Demons to given by a higher power… there can be an infinite amount of sigils for one thing, whether it be a problem of a being.

Sigil magic is a common form of magical work among practitioners; symbols and signs have always been a tool of magicians and alchemists. The ancient Germanic binding runes can be presented as examples of the idea.

In medieval ceremonial magic, the term sigil was commonly used to refer to occult signs which represented various angels and demons which the magician might summon. The magical training books called the grimoires often listed pages of such sigils. A particularly well-known list is in the Lesser Keys of Solomon, or the Goetia, in which the sigils of the 72 princes of the hierarchy of hell are given for the magician’s use. Such sigils were considered to be the equivalent of the true name of the spirit, and thus granted the magician a measure of control over the beings. Sigils are commonly found in Qabalistic magic upon which much of Western magic is based.

Many grimoires speak of engraving sigils on metals, or will categorize a Demon and their metal. This is a correspondence to that Demon, which most likely responds to planetary or elemental aspects. In this fashion, more than likely, Demons of lower rank are categorized as having metals of lesser worth, while the highest are most often gold. This could be a coincidence that these planets and their correspondence line up so though.

While that is the birth of sigil magic, it doesn’t go into sigils themselves. Sigils made in Kamea, or magical number squares are considered Qabalistic. This is done by taking a word, phrase, or name, breaking it down into letters which do not repeat, removing each repeating letter, then taking the numerical value using whatever method, and plotting them on the square. Other sigils, like those used by Austin Osman Spare, and referred to in Liber Null are basically letters placed on themselves, built, and interweaved lines and such. A more simplified version of the afore mentioned sigil making. Frater U.D. gave us a great deal of information in making such sigils in his book Practical Sigil Magic.

A sigil alone, regardless of how it was made, or it’s purpose must be charged. Because it is a symbol, it is a conduit of energy. It assists and helps focus the practitioner on a single point, and that point is the sigil. Charging it depends on the sigils nature. You must decide if it’s something to be done during frustration, lethargy, sexual energy buildup, or so on. When it is charged, that alone could be considered sigil magic.

There is also a bit of controversy as to the outcome of a sigil. Some believe it is sacrilegious to destroy, or alter a sigil, to commit it to fire, or any other element, as it is a part of the Demon. Others say it is just the act of releasing the energy to them, which is likened to the Phoenix rising from the ashes. Regardless, there will most probably be sigils engraved on metal or sigils of paper which are not burnt on an Altar. These are usually either sigils which have a longterm goal, or sigils of Demons which serve as reverence to them.

Planetary signs, Zodiac signs and Runes can also be called sigils, as they are signs or seals which symbolize something, in this case, celestial bodies, the star signs, and letters of protection. Many religions believed in guardians of the visible planets, and the stars which were fixed in the sky, the beasts they could connect the dots within the vast darkness, and holy words. The origin of “666” came from people who used a magical number square, of the Sun, which equaled 666. The signs in the sky and the passage of the Sun across them played out elaborate mythologies to which each one had a sign for the 12 zodiac. Runes had also been used to tell stories, but more often, to protect, guard and bind things which were bad for the tribe or person.

A sigil can also be music, artwork, a feeling… I can’t really define the term within the confines of black lines on white paper. If you can connect with a Demon, and your talent is the ability to play the violin, playing can be a sigil. In truth, a sigil just means a seal, which is originally a word for basically a contract. So it is the connection with the Demon. Even hand signs have been known to work for those who are deaf and cannot speak. It really goes to the self, if you feel a connection, that is great, it works for you! If you don’t, be creative and make a link.

Sigils have been covered, they can range from the simple to the mind numbingly complex. But, what of their use beyond images for the various beings? They have an unlimited use, which is only bound to your imagination in truth. Sigils can be adorned on the flesh as scars and tattoos, can be dressed on cloth, or burnt into wood, can be engraved, baked into clay, drawn on parchment. Again, the use of sigils has no limit. Then, after these various things are created they need to be charged. In the magickal terms it is one of the more simpler arts. Just a simple image charged appropriately can give you grand results.

To charge a sigil, make known the goal you wish. Image the appropriate color of the energy you want to work with. For an example, the colors green, yellow, gold, silver will all work for the attraction of money. Draw up the energy from deep within you, allow it to circulate through your veins, and gather your essence. Then visualize the sigil being electrified in that color, bathing in the light of the energy coming from you. My final act with something like this would be to deeply exhale upon it, a bit of a mock, breathing life into the sigil. You can also charge this with planetary energies, but I would say make sure you can control and not be overwhelmed by your own latent ability before making the jump.

We all die. It is inevitable and unstoppable. Some fear it, some welcome it, some bring it upon themselves.  I don’t question one’s beliefs on this subject as, more then likely, I don’t care what you believe. I just do not condone killing oneself. I find it weak and cowardly for the most part.

Across the world many civilizations have feared death. Either humanizing or demonizing it, most of the high class aristocrats feared it much more then their fellow poorer man. Some worshiped gods of death and made it easier on those left alive, while some asked those gods to kill off those who tormented them. Rich or poor, both sides of the economic food chain shared one main point and that was grief. It is the humanizing point in which we declare our ancestors. Those who grieved and made graves for the dead; instead of making fires, hunting or eating, they toiled away to give proper respect toward those who had left their earthly shells. Its been a cornerstone in religions and in day to day life. Called the “Great Equalizer” as it knows no race, creed, religion, nor can it be bribed. For as things live and breath, there will always be those who need to be laid to rest.

Starting in Sumer, the elite who died would be accompanied with many people, loved ones, treasures, wine and sacrificial animals<as described in the Epic of Gilgamesh>.  They were cooked until charred and blackened<to halt decomposition I assume>, sprinkled with flowers and dressed in the finest clothing and jewels[1]. But as much as people were dressed, the laws in place in the living society followed them in death. The paradise of the afterlife, which is similar to the mythical realm of Eden was the hope that people would reach. All people who were lawful were welcome into this place. Suicide was not allowed in these laws and would not allow that person to this place and force them into a realm named Kur. Laws in this society were not like those of the Hebrew laws. Mostly breaking of the laws were followed by fines, which is why high class men might have been buried with treasures[2] <I found in a small article that males were born evil and doomed to a “Hellish” region in an afterlife ruled by and/or called Kur. Only site I‘ve found that agrees with this is www.Helium.com> <“Sumerians believed that the universe consisted of a flat disk enclosed by a tin dome. The Sumerian afterlife involved a descent into a gloomy netherworld to spend eternity in a wretched existence as a Gidim (ghost).”[3] >

Next we examine the Egyptian civilization and their views on death and the afterlife. Egyptian death rites are much more commonly known. The rich and the high class could afford mummification and tombs to be built, or a much higher honor and be laid to rest in the tomb of a pharaoh. The Pharaoh of course was a living embodiment of a god. He would be whisked to the land of the gods at the daybreak of the time he was laid to rest in his pyramid.[4] The Egyptian Book of the Dead clearly goes through a maze like trail. To not get to the end of this would be to not exist. A horrid fate in the eyes of Egyptians. Yet, each of these trails had a prayer or spell in which you could pass the test, which was usually a god or godform asking if you did some sin. These sins went from eating dung to lusting for someone’s property.<If you look hard enough you will find just about all the 10 Commandments in this book[5]> If you passed all these and your heart was lighter then a feather which symbolized you were a lawful moral person you gained access to a Paradise like land. The rich and high class would keep their positions and slaves would still toil. This afterlife was very much like the visions in the Sumerian cultures.

In Tibetan Buddhism death is an event. When one person dies monks will spend over 40 days chanting and praying to help the spirit through its trails. Its believed death is very traumatic on the spirit and they forget much, but the chanting reminds them of their lifelong studying and assists them in these unique trails. First the dead is encountered by pleasures of the skin. If they cannot overcome temptation of this first trial they stay here until they realize it is a temptation, if said time is too long they are reincarnated into a very low life form. Next they encounter darker forms of gods and goddesses. These may seem they want to kill you but its simply the other side of the many gods. The dead must not run in fear but know and respect them. Some need a certain prayer to pass, which the monks chant. Deeper inside this labyrinth is a spirit who adds up the person’s good deeds and bad deeds with colored stones. If the pile of bad deeds is higher the good deeds the spirit does not let the dead pass. This also has a chant which tells the dead this is merely a figment of their own mind and thus it disappears. After many more trials the dead is brought to the god of Life. They tell the dead if they may enter the highest heaven, be reincarnated as a human<the dead enters a room in which they see many people having sex, this person may choose his parents> reincarnated as a lesser life form, or brought to suffer by the hands of the gods the wronged for a time.  This list goes from highest to lowest.[6]

Although what we believe, or wish we did, may just be theory, and the process of the soul leaving is unknown to most, those who left us, leave us more emotional strain then we can comprehend. The commonly believed stages of grief are denial/isolation, anger,  bargaining, depression then acceptance. I remembered when someone close to me died. He stopped talking to me online for a few days which was not uncommon, then another person said he died. I didn’t believe him of course. I thought “He can’t die, he’s younger then me…” I stayed away from that person for a few days, before asking more questions to try to stump him, to try to make my mind believe my friend hadn’t passed away.  When this person told me everything correctly I immediately jumped towards anger. I was so full of anger for the damn kids parent’s not looking out for their son, for him not using better judgment, even at myself for something very idiotic… for not predicting this would happen. I skipped bargaining, well because death is death and I knew that, there was nothing I could do. I had gone from anger to depression. Feeling dead on the inside, numb not caring what if anything happened. As that emotion faded with time, I knew all I could do was hope for the best for my friend. I will always have him in my memories and in my heart.

While I did lose a good friend I learned a life lesson. I also made a ritual to help me when the times were hard. This of course I will share with you. After invoking Lucifer and Leviathan I took a long piece of glass with an upturned shot glass on top. On the underside I had written a home-made Ouija but with a few added things, including sigils of all the demons he held close and a few words. After a lengthy ritual and at the time my candles died out I had felt better, a last goodbye as it were. Before the light flickered its last, I put the base holder on my upturned shot glass and asked him to draw a sigil. The wax dripped along, and crossed a few times which was a bit annoying but at the end I had an image. I drew it with my blood on a fresh piece of parchment then brought it outside along with a handful of coins I had engraved with sigils and two sticks of incense he told me he favored. Burning the incense with the paper, I sat down, inhaling the smells remembering good times, then when the incense burned away, I dug a little bit and buried it all respectfully. Thanking him, the demons and my own I solemnly walked back inside and went to sleep.

For an Occultist, death can mean many things. The tarot card “Death” symbolizes new life and new beginnings along with change. A death of the old self. Those who study and practice under the Left Hand Path have many ideas for an afterlife. Whether it is the reverse christianity ideal of Hell, or its origin Hel, whether it is an astral paradise or not existent at all, or even if its something we cannot fathom. But for those who fear and those who wonder there are many demons and elder gods of death. The deliverer of souls is aptly named in our culture “The Grim Reaper” but that name has changed from culture to culture. The Greek had Hermes and Thanatos. Hindu mythology has Yama, while other pagan religions had multiple “Women in White” or some time of women who could be responsible for death and the passage onto the next world. For true demons, this is my personal list, alphabetically. Astarte, Bifrons, Bune, Charon, Euronymous/Eurynomous, Gamigin, Hades, Hecate, Hermes, Ishtar, Mictan, Nergal, Nija, Persephone, Thanatos.

Just about every LHP group has some splinter group with at least one “Rite of Death” in which those involved focus asking Demons/Old Gods to kill someone else. I would imagine if this many people are coming together to psychically attack someone, so much they ask for death either the leader is very charismatic or controlling or the person really pissed them off. I personally doubt a Demon would help end another life or tell someone to do something to that point, but I have seen people ask for those to be injured and have seen the results. Its quite staggering. Many Satanic groups are so uptight, they do not even allow discussion of sacrifice topics so its nothing to worry about, but groups like The Order of Nine Angles have published works avowing human sacrifice/murder. Other grimoires specifically ones related to Necronomicon or later grimoires do as well. As stated within The Black Arts by Richard Cavendish there is even rationalities to these killings.[7] I do not advocate human killing, and I doubt any real Occultist would as we see life, and we respect that life no matter. I do however advocate animal sacrifice, as it is legal and protected by the US Supreme Court. It really boils down to you must kill the animal with one hit, so it is a painless death, unlike Hebrew Kosher killed animals… slowly bled out, its horrible and inhumane…

For the Satanist, the visions of death and the afterlife are quite different with each different form of Satanism. The most traditional view would be to go to Hell, the place where “Jehovah” was not present. An afterlife without the center for most of the devout. Only much later did it become a pit of flames and torture, which was wrote to keep people believing, of course. But the first Satanists would believe they would go here. Not as one of the damned, but of one of those who assisted the various demons and Satan himself. Either way I’d personally rather suffer for eternity then be a slave to god.  Deeper Satanic groups with beliefs of Egyptian Gods/Demons believe more towards either the Paradise or another Astral Plane. Those who are Spiritual Satanists believe in a mix of Sumerian, Thelemite<those who work to themselves become a godhead.> and Astral Traveling for the most part. Demonolatry mostly follows a Hermetic belief about death. With the addition of the demon worship it becomes basically reincarnation of elements until they are worthy of the Demonic Plane[8]. Some believe in going to another planet, some believe nothing, some believe a world parallel to our own, but in the end, its really more about what helps you sleep at night. Afterlife is the prologue of life, why skip through the plot?

With that as just a scrapping at the surface of world religions, the process of grieving and death through the occultist’s eyes, one seems to look at similarities.  Older religions have many gods for their death and afterlife rites. Most even have similar tails of another god’s dying or otherwise descent into a realm of the afterlife. With Greco-Roman Mythology, Hades ruled the afterlife and his later-bride, Persephone was tricked into staying with Hades for 3 out of 4 seasons. In Egypt, Osiris was tricked and killed by Set, brought back to life by Isis for sex, dies again after that, body was buried in the sand, later he was dismembered. When Isis brought most of all the pieces back<a fish ate his penis> the other gods made him Ruler of the Underworld. While other religions have multiple layers like the Norse, some are quite simple in nature but the real thing to think about is are they real in any way… Is there something after this? In a cosmic sense we truly are just grains of sand. Has just about every culture made these ideals up just to make them sleep better at night, or to control them, or did one sun-baked madman look into the eternal infinity and see something we can’t comprehend…?
