A few notions about Hermetism

In the first centuries after Christ, when theological and philosophical discussions were still permitted under the influence of gnostic liberty of the communities of Alexandria, appears Hermetism, a spiritual movement that was going to shape the direction of the person to discovering it’s being, of the man to meet and unite with God.

Unlike gnosticism which viewed matter as a product of a dark Demiurge, hermetists considered matter as a condensed spiritual reality. This theologico-philosophical current postulates the successive transformations of conscience from the mineral element to the serafimic, christic and Divine. The key of Hermetism is the return to the self through contemplation and spiritual meditation.

There are three works that secure the tradition and continuity of hermetism in philosophy, theology, high magic and also in the heart of the mystery schools and initiatic societies.

The first, Corpus Hermeticum, a collection of sacred writings attributed to the God of Universal Mind, Hermes Mercurius Trismegistos, who teaches the gods and men the written and spoken language. The Corpus survives the fall of the byzantine roman empire in a single copy, bought in 1469 by the leaders of Renaissance Florence, the Medici Family.

The second work which will feed the collective mentality of the initiates is a dialogue between Hermes and his disciple, called Asclepios.

And the third is a sum of occult knowledge called Picatrix, a codex of High Magic attributed to the great Majriti.

Hermetism of the Renaissance will become the existential motor of the essential initiatic societies and organization such as rosicrucianism. This transforming vision on existence becomes a universal philosophy through the brilliant contribution of Marsilio Ficino, Pico Della Mirandola, Cornelius Agrippa and Giordano Bruno.

The essence of their thinking was that all material forms are the expression of thoughts of spiritual nature. In other words, as God thought the world and then His thoughts become reality through the harmonization of the contraries: masculine-feminine, day-night, darkness-light, good-bad etc.

The concept of Great Architect has been borrowed by Freemasonry from the hermetic system. In the modern era, hermetism will be found in distinct orders such as The Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor or The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

To this occidental esoterism (for it was inherited from the latins, greeks and egyptians) was opposing the Theosophical Society of Helena Blavatsky at the same period of time, who affirmed that the true tradition can be found only in Asia.

Today the hermetic ideas stand at the origin of all rosicrucian orders.

The Divine Manifestation in Esoteric thought

Even though the modern era defines Jehovah as being the only god, the correct translation of the Hebraic Elohim is articulated at the plural. For the adept of esoterism, the two names refer to different entitites. Elohim are seven High Spirits that act together as a single God and work the Solar Energy, and Jehovah is the one that starts battling Lucifer, meaning the goddess Venus.

For the ancient initiates Jehovah is the High Spirit of the Moon. He is the creator of reflection and of thinking. He teaches us to fight with our impulses and bestial desires through analysis and reflection. If the Sun is life, the Moon teaches us the morality to gain Life. In a hard way to understand for materialists or those who think only exoterically, the moon governs the pituitary gland or hypophysis.

For the Jews, Jehovah, and for the Arabs, Allah, he is the Demiurge that teaches us how to fight Lucifer giving us the rules which, if respected, would help us access the superior levels of consciousness that bind us with the Source. As the Elohim chained Satan, or as the Sun defeated Saturn, so does Jehovah or Allah defeat Lucifer.

The echo of this titanic fight is found in all the world’s cultures: the battle of Krishna with the snake-demon Kaliya, of Apollo with the monstrous snake Python or the fight of Perseus with the winged snaked that threatened Andromeda.

We read in the Apocalypse (6) about the seven spirits called Elohim: “And I saw in the midst of the Throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, having seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of god, sent forth into all the earth.” Also in the Apocalypse of John (12:7-8) we find an interesting reference to the war in Heaven with the Dragon or Snake: “And there was war in Heaven. Michael and his angels going forth to war with the Dragon; and the Dragon warred and his angels; and they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in Heaven.”

The moon-god Jehovah gained a great victory over Lucifer like the Elohim chained Satan. We’d remember these things if we ask ourselves where do the names of the days come from: In the Jewish tradition, the Shabbat falls saturday; Saturday (Saturnday – meaning the transition from mineral to vegetal), Sunday (Sun-Day – day of the Sun) and Monday (Moon Day – day of the Moon). In Romanian sounds even closer: Luni-Luna (Monday, Moon); Marţi-Marte (Tuesday, Mars); Joi-Jupiter (Thursday, Jupiter); Vineri-Venus (Friday, Venus), etc.

Moses, the father of the jewish people is an egyptian reformer, because by leaving his country he begins a search for a new land, where people would live by the Laws of God and not manipulated by the Man who thinks is God (Pharaoh). The entire jewish thought is contained in the Pentateuch, the five books of Moses that constitute the Torah (the Law).

Moses founded a school of High Magic which he called The Tabernacle Mysteries where he first taught kabbalah, a secret doctrine delivered by Yahweh along with the Decalogue, through which man could delve in the astral and spiritual planes. The most renowned mage of antiquity was considered king Solomon, who built for the first time the Temple of Yahweh on Earth. Of course, the physical construction was doubled by an invisible temple in which the Divine Forces manifested.

About Solomon it is known that he had power on all planes of existence, evoking angels, conjuring demons, speaking with the spirits of nature. He left to his followers the Clavicles of Solomon or Keys of Solomon, a real Bible of esoterism, the corpus from which later derived: astrology, alchemy, magic.

Although, today the jewish thinking is very rigid in recognizing the unseen worlds and especially in accepting divination or magic, its founding father Moses was one of the most terrible mages of the world. He competed with the Pharaoh’s mages by transforming a staff into a snake, throwing 10 plagues over Egypt and splitting the Sea in two.

The term moses comes from Egyptian esoterism and means: “Initiated in the mysteries of the Schools of Wisdom, who preaches the wills of the gods and the mysteries of life”.

The legacy of Moses and Solomon the late western though had a good sudden change in the Middle Ages but was quickly eradicated by the Inquisition.
