Magick squares are used to draw in the influences of their corresponding planet. Be mindful that with any work of magick, where you include the universal forces, they must be in harmony with your intent.

A magick square (kamea in Hebrew) is an array of numbers arranged in a square so that the sum of any row is equal to the sum of any column. For most magick squares, the sum of either of the diagonal also equals the sum of either a row or column. Magick squares have been esteemed for their magickal and mathematical properties for thousands of years in China, India, and the Middle East.

The most common use for these Kameas is to provide a pattern upon which to construct the sigils of spirits, angels or demons; the letters of the entity’s name are converted into numbers, and lines are traced through the pattern that these successive numbers make on the kamea. In a magical context, the term magic square is also applied to a variety of word squares or number squares found in magical grimoires, including some that do not follow any obvious pattern, and even those with differing numbers of rows and columns.

They are generally intended for use as talismans. For instance the following squares are: The Sator square, one of the most famous magic squares found in a number of grimoires including the Key of Solomon; a square “to overcome envy”, from The Book of Power; and two squares from The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, the first to cause the illusion of a superb palace to appear, and the second to be worn on the head of a child during an angelic invocation.

The derivation of the sigil of Hagiel, the planetary intelligence of Venus, drawn on the magic square of Venus. Each Hebrew letter provides a numerical value, giving the vertices of the sigil.

There are eight different arrangements of a nine-division (3×3) magick square.
There are 880 ways to arrange a 16-division (4×4) magick square.

However, we are only concerned here with the seven kamea, which have been traditionally associated with the seven planets in practical qabalah. Each of these kamea is associated with a planetary Sephirah on the Tree of Life.

The number of divisions in a row or column of the magick square is governed by the number of the appropriate Sephirah/Sephiroth (the order of the sphere on the Tree):

Each kamea has a “seal,” which is a geometric diagram designed so as to touch upon all the numbers of the square. The seal is used in talismanic magic to represent the entire pattern square and to act as a witness or governor for them. The seal is the epitome or synthesis of the square.

There are also an “Intelligence” and a “Spirit” connected with each kamea which are derived from the key numbers of the square using techniques of gematria. The Intelligence of a planet is viewed as an evolutionary, guiding, inspiring, or informing entity. However, the Spirit of a planet is traditionally considered more of a blind or neutral force. If the numerical equivalent of a letter does not exist on a given kamea, the number is “reduced” to the next lowest value in the same division of the Aiq Bekar until it fits onto the kamea. A letter should never be reduced further than necessary.

The resulting numerical sequence is then traces on the appropriate kamea to produce the sigil of that name. The traditional seals and sigils do not in all cases follow the entire numerical sequence of each name. Some of the longer sigils seem to have been shortened or compressed for easier use. In any case, I am reproducing them in essentially the same forms given by both Wm. Barrett and Israel Regardie, as these are the traditional forms of the sigils.

Sigils, Magick Squares and Planetary Seals

Here is detailed (in an abridged form) an ancient form of magick that has been presented traditionally and updated for modern practitioners. They illustrate the incorporation of magick squares and sigils for greater success in your workings. Magick squares are used to draw in the influences of their corresponding planet. Be mindful that with any work of magick, where you include the universal forces, they must be in harmony with your intent.

Each Magick Square represents a matrix of planetary energy. Magick squares are based on the original work done by ancient mathematicians in their description of numbers. Magickal practitioners expanded on this to carry over the correlation between a number and its corresponding planet, therefore representing planetary energy in a mathematical format.

A magick square is made up using three key numbers. The first one is the planetary number. The second is the square of the planetary number (or the planetary number multiplied by itself). The third is the sum of the square (or all the incremental numbers starting at 1 that it takes to fill the boxes in the square added together and then divided by the planetary number).

The best way to understand this is by example so for illustration we’ll can the planet Saturn.

Saturn is represented by the number 3. Start by drawing the magick square with 3 boxes horizontally and vertically for a total of 9 squares (the square of 3 being 9). This makes the sum of the square in this case 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 equaling 45. Now 45 dividing by Saturn’s planetary number of 3 this equals 15. Each row of numbers in the magick square, horizontally and vertically, must equal 15 (the sum of the square of the planetary number of 3).

When drawing the Magick Square, all numbers should be placed in the square, in sequence beginning with number 1. This is the magick square representing Saturn. Notice that the square is 3 by 3 and that all the rows equal 15.

The word “sigil” comes from the Latin sigillum, meaning a sign or signature. In magickal terms a sigil is a (unitary) glyph derived from a name, word, or magickal formula by means of a direct analogical process (such as numerical conversion and tracing upon magick squares [kamea]). If the appropriate process is reversed, then the name or word may be retrieved from the pattern of the sigil. However, if the sigil is condensed or compressed, or if it was generated by using a system that you are unfamiliar with, you may be unable to decipher it by reversing the coding process. This is particularly true of sigils that were created or obtained through trance or other non-standardized methods. In these cases, it may be necessary to examine them through intuition, divination, or “astral inspection” in order to determine any word, name, or meaning connected with them.

The important idea is that the seed or essence of a force, concept, or pattern is equally in the sigil and the name (logos). Sigil and name are the two facets of the same thing. They could be said to relate much the same as the Sanskrit terms yantra and mantra do.

There are many applications and forms of sigils besides those of the Planetary Spirits and Intelligences.

Your own name can be converted to numerical form and traced on planetary kamea to provide a sigil of yourself in the aspect of that particular planet. This could be useful for work with talismans, ritual invocation, or direct meditation. There are many other uses and variations.

(The Aurum Solis uses a system involving presigilla associated with the ten Sephiroth, the Zodiac, and the elements. The appropriate presigilla is drawn before the commencement of the sigil proper. This method is found in the Mysteria Magica.)

It can be viewed a symbol of our intent. Sigils incorporated with other influences add direction and focus to spell work. Sigils may be traced in the air, carved on candles, drawn on paper and burned, etc. Sigils may be drawn or formed using the magick squares that are described above.

Saturn rules financial institutions and dealings, such as banks, real estate transactions, investments, educational institutions, etc. Example: If your intent is for successful investing. You would want a sigil to represent yourself at being successful in your investment endeavors. So by choosing the word investor to be your sigil, the visualization is of the self as a smart investor, surrounded by favorable aspects and clear choices to make our money grow.

This is one method using the Western system of numerology. Each letter has a numerical equivalent assigned to it (see chart below).

Take our key word, investor, and map it to the chart shown above.

Starting with your first corresponding number and continuing through each in order, you draw out your sigil.

This gives you the following sigil, representing your intention, as an investor

To use this sigil you might incorporate some of the other correspondences for Saturn. Start by carving the sigil into a black candle anointed with bergamot or cypress. Then surround the candle with onyx and place it on top of the world card from a tarot deck. As you light the candle and focus your objective. Now you have drawn in many aspects of Saturn with crystals, oils and tarot, and personalized your aim with the sigil.

By arranging the four letters of the Great Name, י ה ו ה, (I H V H), in the form of the Pythagorean Tetractys, the 72 powers of the Great Names of God are manifested. The key to the problem is as follows:

The Tetragrammaton, or the four-lettered Name of God, written thus יהוה, is pronounce Jehovah. The first letter is י, Yod, the Germ, the Life, the Flame, the Cause, the One, and the most fundamental of the Jewish phallic emblems. Its numerical value is 10, and it is to be considered as the 1 containing the 10. In the Qabbalah it is declared that the a Yod is in reality three Yods, of which the first is the beginning, the second is the center, and the third is the end. Its throne is the Sephira Chochmah (according to Ibn Gebirol, Kether), from which it goes forth to impregnate Binah, which is the first ה, He. The result of this union is Tiphereth, which is the ו Vau, whose power is 6 and which symbolizes the six members of the Lesser Adam. The final ה, He, is Malchuth, the Inferior Mother, partaking in part of the potencies of the Divine Mother, the first He. By placing the four letters of the Tetragrammaton in a vertical column, a figure closely resembling the human body is produced, with Yod for the head, the first He for the arms and shoulders, Vau for the trunk of the body, and the final He for the hips and legs. If the Hebrew letters be exchanged for their English equivalents, the form is not materially changed or the analogy altered. It is also extremely significant that by inserting the letter ש, Shin, in the middle of the name Jehovah, the word Jehoshua, or Jesus, is formed thus: יהשוה

The Invocation of Mephistopheles

The text reads: “Mephistopheles, the most notorious of the spirits of evil, is closely identified with the exploits of Dr. Faust. Goethe defines Mephistopheles as “part of the power that still works for good while ever scheming ill.” The majestic figure of the archtempter familiar to opera-goers is not the Mephistopheles of the Grimoires. The secret archives of magic contain the names and descriptions of all the elemental demons and the methods by which they can be controlled. Of Mephistopheles it is written: “He is under the power of Jupiter and his regent’s name is Zadkiel, one of the throne angels of the Holy Jehovah. He can be made to appear early on Wednesday mornings (Jupiter’s day and hour) or late the same evening. He appears first as a fiery beat, but the lesser and more pleasing manifestation is as a little bald-headed man in a black cape.” So the Mephistopheles of ceremonial magic, rising out of the invisible at the demand of the conjurer, limps into view as a grotesque dwarf, but woe unto the unwary magician who falls under the control of this diminutive creature. It is not generally known that Gilles de Leval – the “Bluebeard” of nursery lore – actually lived and practiced his infamies exactly as recorded in the story; that black magic was the true motive for these crimes has also been concealed. But the chapel used by Bluebear and the altar with the image of the demon upon it have been found, and scattered through the various apartments of his castle were the ceremonial implements used in the Black Mass.

If we disassemble the Tetragrammaton in Hebrew into its factors and add up its numerological numbers, we will receive the number 72: (י (10), יה (15), יהו (21), יהוה (26

or 10+15+21+26=72, the 72 names of God.

The names are derived by writing the letters of the three verses one above the other, with no vowel points, spaces, or punctuation marks, the first from right to left, the second from left to right, and the third from right to left. The names are then read top down.

Additions -El ( אֵל ) and –Yah (יָה ) to the names create the names of the 72 Angels or as the kabbalist call them Geniis.

(Note: there exist also completely different interpretations of the two additions -El and -Yah as this one presented by Agrippa; cf. for example Aryeh Kaplan, Sepher Yetzirah; or the standard correspondences of the Sefirot and the Names of God where “El” is attributed to Chesed-Love and “Yah” to Chakmah-Wisdom.) There is a problem with the way one have to pronounce the names as in Hebrew there are Vowel Points instead of letters for the pronounce the word, another problem came from the fact that there are some letters that don’t exist in Latin or English. This fact is the cause of many way in writing the names in other languages than Hebrew !

The shapes, sounds, sequences, and vibrations of the 72 names radiate a wide range of energy forces. The Light they emit purifies our hearts. Their spiritual influence cleanses destructive impulses from our natures. Their sacred energy removes rash and intolerant emotions, fear, and anxiety from our beings. The Hebrew letters are instruments of power. In fact, the Hebrew word for “letter” actually means pulse or vibration, indicating a flow of energy. The Hebrew alphabet transcends religion, race, geography, and the very concept of language. The three letters signify three spiritual forces—a positive charge, a negative charge, and a ground wire—to create a circuit of energy.The combination of the principle of five with the principle of trinity now applies to the 72 Genii or Names or angels of God. These 72 Names are composed in the original Hebrew Kabbalah of three letters, to which either the power attribute -el or -iah is added, to create a five-lettered Name of God. Thinking in the terms of Bardon’s system we could assume (speculatively), that El (God power) is a representation of the electric fluid and -iah (God mercy) represents the magnetic fluid, adding the two fundamental powers to the qualities of each single name. One further indication that this concept could be true is that the Bahir (see paragraph 8 of the Bahir and Kaplan’s commentary) states, that the letter “He” at the end of a word means the feminine quality of this thing, so we could say that the Yod of -yah reflects God (represented by a single point: Yod) in his feminine aspect (represented by He at the end of the word). Additionally He represents the concept of holding. Both concepts parallel very well the concept of the magnetic fluid. The logic behind the match is as following – each name is given a verse which contains the 4 letters name of God יְהוָה (YHVH) as well as the three letters of the name itself. If the name contains י , ה , וָ (Yod, Heh, or Vav), they must appear somewhere beside the 4 letter name.

By arranging the four letters of the Great Name, (Y H V H), in the form of the Pythagorean Tetractys, the 72 powers of the Great Name of God are manifested. From the Bahir.In paragraph 110 the Bahir states about the 72 Names: “… These are the 72 names. They emanate and divide themselves into three sections, 24 to each section. Each sections has four directions to watch, east, west, north and south. They are therefore distributed, six to each direction. …” Important is also the following sentence in the same paragraph: “All of them are sealed with YHVH …“

Why its start at the 21 mars ? It is the vernal equinox (spring equinox, March equinox, or northward equinox) from 19-21 mars defers from year to year, it is the moment when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, heading northward. It is the precise moment that spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also at this time when all the event of the Exodus from Egypt and the miracle of opening the red sea by wind from codes ( in Hebrew “BERUAH CODIM” – Exodus 14:20 ) happened. From the bible 12:2 ” Let this month be to you the first of months, the first month of the year.” and 12:18 “In the first month, from the evening of the fourteenth day, let your food be unleavened bread till the evening of the twenty-first day of the month.“
